Speed Bento Contest

Speed Bento Contest

A few contest announcements today and a 20% off coupon code for an online store in the U.S. with bento gear.

1. Bento of the Month Contest on the Lunch in a Box Forum

Salmon cake lunch for preschooler v1Over on the new Lunch in a Box Forum, moderator QChan came up with the fun idea of holding a recurring “Bento of the Month Contest” for kicks, and the theme for the first one will be Speed.

If you’d like to participate, you’ve got until January 28, 2009 to make the speediest, most delicious looking bento you can, and post a photo of it in the contest thread. QChan will then create a poll with all of the photos for forum members to vote on the winner. If someone would like to donate a bento-related prize and ship to the winner, that’d be cool. (Email me at lunchinabox [AT} gmail {DOT] com) [EDIT: Jenn of the Not Exactly Bento blog has generously offered the cookbook Authentic Japanese Cuisine for Beginners: A Step-by-Step Guide to the winner. Thanks Jenn!]

An explanation with how long it took you to make and what’s in the meal would be helpful, and if you blog about your entry feel free to include a link back to your full entry. We’re pretty container-agnostic, so it’s not limited to lunches packed in bento boxes alone. Feel free to submit lunches packed in thermal lunch jars (like the Mr. Bento), Laptop Lunchboxes, etc.

I’m looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with! [2/2 UPDATE: Vote for your favorite in the poll!] (Read on for the coupon code and a reminder of the deadline for the Bento Blog Search logo contest.

2. Bento Blog Search logo contest deadline tomorrow

A quick reminder that Friday, January 16, 2009 (tomorrow) is the last day for entries in the design contest for graphics for the new Bento Blog Search engine. We’ve got some fantastic entries so far; thanks to everyone who’s spent time working on this!

3. 20% off at Happy Japan for Lunch in a Box readers

Happy Japan, an online store with cute bento items in the U.S., posted a coupon code on the forum, offering Lunch in a Box readers a special 20% off their total order (excluding shipping) as part of an opening promotion. Enter the code LUNCHINABOX in the appropriate area during checkout to receive the discount. In addition, orders of $100 or more receive free UPS ground shipping.

I’m not affiliated with the Happy Japan store and haven’t ordered anything from them, but wanted to pass that along. Feedback from forum members so far has been positive, but this is not necessarily an endorsement. See my online bento store list for additional sources, as well as the Bento Store Locator for local stores compiled by readers around the world.

  1. Hi Biggie, this is off-topic, but I was wondering if you’re familiar with http://www.fit-fresh.com/products/transportation/lunchonthego.php or the rest of their line? I got it for $10 minus 20% at Bed Bath & Beyond a while ago. The compartments seemed like a great idea, but my sandwiches were usually too big to allow the ice pack and side containers to sit on top of it and still fit in the box! The sandwich in the picture is definitely too big.

  2. @2 from Kayleigh: Sorry about your problem logging in; if you e-mail me privately with which login you signed up as, I’ll troubleshoot to get you up and running. :-)

  3. Just found your blog and I love it.

My daughter is starting primary school in two weeks and I’m starting to figure out now how we will do her lunch. Great to find so many brilliant ideas in the one spot.
